"Deanna Marie"
"Frances"

The "Deanna Marie" is the youngest vessel of these three. Built in 1958 by Adolf Sandness, and Captained by Jeff Werner, she is a classic 44 ft. elliptical fantail stern wooden troller. Her graceful lines and excellent sea keeping ability are apparent in this photo taken at "Cuffy Cove" during the 2002 Salmon fishery.

The "Frances" is the oldest vessel, but still nimble and spry. Built in 1931 in Seattle by Eli Johnson, she is a 40 ft classic double ended troller. Constructed of Oak, Fir, and Port Orford Cedar, she has excellent sea keeping ability, and was recently sold to her new Captain Mike Anderson and is now moored in Eureka Ca. Past owner, the late Scott Boley, made good maintenance a priority for 32 years, extensively rebuilding and upgrading the hull and machinery in the spring of 2005 to keep the vessel modern and fully capable. This photo taken at the dock in Gold Beach shows the classic pointed canoe stern.

Fishing along the Oregon Coast is a challenging occupation. These photos show calm seas, but that is the exception rather than the norm. The fishermen often fish in winds of 25 knots or more, and seas of 8' to 12' or more. The salmon fishery can be up to 30 miles offshore, while albacore Tuna may be several hundred miles offshore. The vessels generally stay at sea several days at a time, keeping their catch buried in ice, and drifting at night without power. That is why good sea boats are so prized by fishermen. It is a matter of both safety and comfort.
